The Solon School District is pleased to announce that Melissa Holtz has accepted the offer to serve as the next Intermediate School Principal. Her hire will be official after a background check and school board approval. Melissa was identified as the best fit after formal interviews in the district on Monday, March 8th. She was the top choice collectively by each group she interviewed with including teachers, support staff, administrators, and students.
Melissa was thrilled to accept the position saying, “Solon is a perfect fit for me and my family. I am so excited to accept this offer from Solon and become part of such a progressive district. I look forward to working with the team and continuing with Solon’s tradition of excellence.”Melissa currently serves as the PK-5 Elementary Principal and Curriculum Director for River Valley Community School District in Correctionville, IA. She’s been in this role since 2017 and served as a 6th grade teacher and K-6 special education teacher for North Scott Schools prior. Melissa has also served as the building technology advisor, instructional coach and Title I Coordinator at various times throughout her career.
Her most recent efforts have been on professional development for teachers, building a student-centered culture, implementation of highly effective Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s) and curriculum updates. She has also planned and delivered training to her staff around elementary units of writing based on the Lucy Calkins' Units of Study and power standards.
Melissa has a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Iowa. She earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education in 2009 from St. Ambrose University. She earned a second Master’s Degree in Educational Administration also from St. Ambrose University in 2016.
Melissa is married to her husband of nearly 22 years, Dan. Together they have two children, Austin and Sara. Austin will graduate from River Valley High School this year. While attending high school, Austin has enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. After graduation, he plans to attend USD in Vermillion where he will major in sport management and kinesiology. Sara is finishing up her sophomore year of high school and excited to join the Solon community in the fall. Sara has a passion for sports including basketball, softball, volleyball and track. Dan is currently employed with VT Industries in Holstein, Iowa and will soon begin searching for new employment in preparation for their move to Solon. In her free time, Melissa enjoys reading mystery novels and watching her kids play sports. A native of Kentucky, she is an avid Kentucky basketball fan and she and Dan both support their Atlanta Braves during baseball season! When she’s not near some sort of sporting event you can find Melissa at the nearest coffee shop sipping on a latte.
The district had 65 applications for the Intermediate Principal position. Grundmeyer Leader Search Consultant, Dr. Trent Grundmeyer, worked with the district to recruit and hire the position. Melissa will transition with current principal Jessica Tabor before officially starting her contract on July 1, 2021. Please welcome Melissa and her family to the Solon family.
