Language Arts

Students in sixth grade expand and deepen concepts, skills, and strategies learned at earlier grades. They make new connections as they experience more sophisticated ideas and begin to study subjects in more formal ways. They read a variety of texts with greater depth, critically analyzing and evaluating information and ideas. Sixth graders revisit and refine concepts and their knowledge of English Language Arts conventions as they become more sophisticated, independent learners.

Weekly stories and leveled readers from the Houghton Mifflin Reading Series will be used to support the following themes:

  • Courage (Focus on Poetry)
  • What Really Happenend? (Focus on Plays)
  • Doers and Dreamers (Focus on Speeches)

Two novel units will also be completed while focusing on the reading strategies.

Grammar and language skills are covered during weekly lessons from the Houghton Mifflin Reading Series.

A mix of free-form and creative writing assignments from each curricular area are given throughout the year. Spelling will be practiced within writing assignments.

Daily Language Review

Daily exercises are corrected and discussed for practice during the week.

The GO Math! book is used as a basis for our math curriculum. This is combined with our daily math starters called Arithmetic Developed Daily (ADD). Students will develop and demonstrate their mathematical understanding in the following areas:
