Literacy Instruction

The fifth grade uses the Houghton Mifflin Reading Series for literacy instruction. The series is broken down into six different themes. We also incorporate novels to connect to the themes as well as encourage curricular connections to social studies. Within each theme, students will be exposed to and have the opportunity to utilize different reading strategies, comprehension skills, decoding skills, vocabulary, spelling, and grammar which helps to develop language as well as writing. Our writing instruction is based on the 6+1 traits of writing program. Each student will be able to develop listening, speaking, and viewing skills as well as information and study skills.

Social Studies & Science

Our social studies and science units alternate throughout the year. We begin the year with a unit in science called Microworlds. Other science units include plants, nutrition, and human growth and reproduction. Our units in social studies include map skills, Revolutionary War, pioneers/Hacker Trail, Civil War and Iowa History. Our social studies and science units offer many opportunities for group projects and extension activities.

We use the Go Math series as a basis for our math curriculum. The mathematics content helps students develop flexibility and confidence in approaching problems, fluency, in using mathematical skills and tools to solve problems, and proficiency in evaluating their solutions. All students will be included in significant mathematics learning as they:

  • Spend time exploring problems in depth
  • Share and produce alternative strategies
  • Represent their understanding using concrete materials
  • Work in a variety of groupings – as a whole class, individually, in pairs, and in small groups

The following 11 chapters will be covered:

  • Place Value, Multiplication, and Expressions
  • Divide Whole Numbers
  • Add and Subtract Decimals
  • Multiply Decimals
  • Divide Decimals
  • Add and Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators
  • Multiply Fractions
  • Divide Fractions
  • Algebra: Patterns and Graphing
  • Convert Units of Measure
