Our second graders soar to Student Success at Lakeview!
If you are a second grader at Lakeview Elementary, you’re in for a wonderful adventure! As teachers, our goal is to give second graders wings to fly! We feel second grade is a dynamic, forward-moving community of lifelong learners. Our team has worked together to provide a safe, child-centered environment where a student can discover his/her own area of giftedness while achieving maximum successes.
Investigations in Number, Data, and Space® is a complete mathematics program. It is designed to help all elementary children understand the fundamental ideas underlying number and arithmetic, geometry, data, measurement, and algebraic thinking. Mathematics content inInvestigations includes computational fluency with whole number operations, the structure of the base ten number system, the meaning of fractions, representing and describing data, examining 2D and 3D shapes, measuring, and change over time. Students are encouraged to reason mathematically, develop problem-solving strategies, and represent their thinking using models, diagrams, and graphs.
The second grade uses the Houghton-Mifflin Reading Program. It includes small and large group instruction. The children will be introduced to a variety of children's literature, such as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, biographies, etc. Some of the skills we work on are decoding, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.
Writing - Six Traits
The Six Traits Classroom Kit we use is based on the original six-trait model of writing instruction. The Six Traits are Ideas, Sentence Fluency, Voice, Conventions, Organization, and Word Choice.
The goal of Zaner-Bloser Handwriting is to teach students to write legibly. The second grade writing curriculum includes a review of manuscript letters and gives an introduction to the lower case cursive letters.
Our spelling curriculum is a part of our Houghton-Mifflin Reading Program.
We use the Kids Kits from Grant Wood AEA. The three kits we will be using in science this year, will be butterflies, balance and motion, and soils. These kits provide many hands on activities.
Social Studies Alive! My Community
Social Studies Alive provides a rich, powerful classroom instruction that differs dramatically from other programs! The teaching approach is mindful of the challenges of standards-based instruction, yet it promotes innovative, effective instruction that excites students about social studies!
We use the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill Health & Wellness to teach students the information and skills they need to become health-literate, to maintain and improve health, to prevent disease, and to reduce health-related risk behaviors.
Second grade students participate in specialty classes in Music, Art, Media, and Physical Education. Trained specialists not only teach essential skills relative to their special areas, but also work with classroom teachers to plan learning experiences that enrich classroom curriculum and assist children in discovering their own strengths and talents.
